Navjot Sidhu guided India to a dramatic and hard-earned three-wicket victory in the fifth one-day cricket international against England to keep alive the Indians' hopes of levelling the best-of-six series.

Sidhu hit an unbeaten 134 as India, which now trails 3-2 with today's match to play, reached a victory target of 257 with two overs to spare.
But the victory came only after another missile-throwing incident when England's Alec Stewart was struck by a stone while fielding.

England declined to carry out its pre-match threat to walk off the field and there was no further trouble until the final overs when the 30,000 crowd celebrated imminent victory by throwing rubbish everywhere. Stewart suffered no lasting injury and continued in the field.

Sidhu's exploits overshadowed Robin Smith's maiden tour century for England. The South African-born batsman hit 129 in 145 balls, only for England to collapse after his dismissal, to be all out for 256 off the last ball of its allotted 50 overs.

India lost two early wickets but England was unable to press home the advantage as Sidhu and Mohammad Azharuddin added 175 in 164 balls.

When Azharuddin was caught in the deep for 74 India was coasting to victory but England fought back with five wickets for 26 runs.

Sidhu, slowing the pace that brought him his hundred in 106 balls, was equal to the challenge, calmly steering his team to victory with an unbroken 52-run partnership with Anil Kumble.
