Teenager Jeff Wilson became an instant national hero by guiding New Zealand to a three-wicket victory over Australia in the fourth one-day international.
Wilson, who scored a brilliant solo try and was the player of the match in a schoolboys rugby Test against Australia last year, smashed an unbeaten 44 from 28 deliveries to enable New Zealand to level the five-match series at 2-2.
Australia tallied an imposing 7-247 from its 50 overs and the New Zealanders' cause looked lost at the 40-over mark when captain Martin Crowe was run out for a superb 91 with 76 runs still required.
Wicketkeeper Tony Blain provided an enterprising 41 and then 19-year-old Wilson took over, hitting three fours and one six, including the winning boundary behind square-leg off Steve Waugh as the New Zealanders reached 7-250 with two balls to spare.
Stand-in Australian captain Mark Taylor had carlier used up the 10 overs of front-liners Merv Hughes, Paul Reiffel and Tony Dodemaide, and was left with the Waugh twins to make up the final 10 overs.
Steve Waugh was carted for 59 runs from his 7.4 overs while Mark Waugh conceded 20 from two.
New Zealand needed more than seven runs an over for the last 16 overs of its innings and Taylor conceded the Australians had wasted their good efforts with the bat.
Crowe carried the early part of the innings as wickets fell regularly, hitting eight boundaries and one six in all for his 32nd one-day half-century.
Australia set such a challenging target after Mark Waugh's maiden one-day century built a powerful base.
The younger Waugh glided to 108 from only 131 deliveries, sharing a 143-run stand for the second wicket with Dean Jones, who contributed 64.
The series will be decided at Eden Park in Auckland today where Australia lost the opening match of the one-day World Cup last year.
