A drained Australian side took some minor consolation from a long summer with a dramatic three-run victory over New Zealand in the deciding one-day international at Eden Park.

Without a trophy all summer after losses to the West Indies in the Test series and the World Series competition, and an unsatisfying 1-1 draw in the Test series in New Zealand, Australia won the one-dayers 3-2 after New Zealand just failed to reach its target.

After Australia made 8-232, the New Zealanders battled hard but fell agonisingly short, scoring 8-229.

The Australians nearly blew their 2-0 series lead as ninth-wicket pair Gavin Larsen (33no) and Chris Pringle (22no) put on 54 in only 28 minutes, But Australia got home when Pringle could not smash Merv Hughes' last ball for a six to win.

Waugh provided the basis of Australia's 8-232 with a run-a-ball knock of 83, backed by solid contributions from David Boon (40) and brother Steve (39).

The tourists were cruising at 2-145 at one stage but part-time medium-pacer Rod Latham wiped out any thoughts of a 250-plus total with career best figures of 5-32 from 10 overs.

New Zealand lost the key wicket of Martin Crowe for only 11 and entered the last 10 overs at 6-158 with 75 runs still required, virtually a repeat of the chase it successfully managed in Hamilton on Saturday.
