New Zealand cricket captain Ken Rutherford ful- ly endorsed Pakistan counterpart Salim Malik's decision to lead his team off the field during at Eden Park.

Malik took his players off the ground early in the New Zealand innings after fast bowler Ata-ur- Rehman, fielding on the boundary, was struck on the side of a head by an object thrown from the boisterous, crowded terrace embankment.

Although no official from either camp or New Zealand Cricket was specific on what the object was, sources close to the Pakistan team said last night it was believed to be a soft-drink bottle. Earlier Rehman had been hit by a piece of fruit thrown from the same section of the crowd.

Play restarted after an 11-minute delay to clear debris from that section of the ground. It was the first time an international cricket match in New Zealand had been stopped because of unruly crowd behaviour.

Rutherford hit out last night at the behaviour of spectators on the terrace. "It was distasteful," he said.

"It shouldn't happen at cricket grounds. I don't know what the crowd was up to. We're very disappointed with them."

"They had every right to walk off and I certainly don't bear any grudge to Salim for taking them off." Rutherford said.

Rutherford and partner Mark Greatbatch stayed in the middle of the ground during the hold-up, and Rutherford said last night the delay was more detrimental to his side than Pakistan.

The tourists went on to record a 36-run win and go 2-0 up in the five-match series. "I felt I had to start my innings again. It was more of a distraction for us because it gave them a chance to re-analyse where they were going," Rutherford said.

Pakistan coach Intikhab Alam said last night that his team considered the matter closed.
"The crowd got a bit excited. We came off to give them time to settle down," he said.

Intikhab was not sure what the object was that struck Rehman but said there had been no cut or major damage to his head. He expressed satisfaction with the way the matter was handled by Auckland and New Zealand cricket officials.

NZC chairman Peter McDermott said security arrangements for next Sunday's fourth one-dayer against Pakistan would be reviewed.
