New Zealand cricket team bosses Geoff Howarth and Ken Rutherford tried to wring some consolation from their team's third successive one-day defeat by Pakistan.
The 11-run loss gave Pakistan the five-game series 3-0 and New Zealand is playing only for pride in the last two games, at Auckland on Sunday and Christchurch next Wednesday.
Rutherford felt New Zealand was heading for victory until late in the chase for Pakistan's tally of 6-213.
"Up till about the 35th over we were pretty much on terms with our target," he said.
"But we underestimated the effect Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis swinging the ball would have."
The pair ripped through the New Zealand innings, as five wickets fell in 5 overs to end the Kiwis' hopes of staying in the series.
Rutherford described Akram, who swung the ball late both ways to snatch victory from the New Zealanders, as "an extraordinary bowler, a freakish talent".
Rutherford said his players were very disappointed at the defeat.
"If you look through our batting order, the highest score was 46 along with three 30s. We needed to get at least one score in the 70s or 80s for everyone else to bat around," he said.
Howarth felt it had been a significantly better performance than last Sunday's dismal 36-run loss when New Zealand was dismissed for 110.
Pakistan coach Intikhab Alam felt New Zealand had put up a far better performance than in the last two matches of the series.
"I thought we were 20-30 short. New Zealand bowled very well at the end of our innings but Wasim and Waqar bowled extremely well in the last 10 overs," he said.
"They did brilliantly for us."
