Pakistan and New Zealand tied the fourth one-day cricket international at Eden Park in a thrilling finish in Auckland.

New Zealand needed 162 for its first win in the series, but man-of-the-match Waqar Younis bowled magnificently to dismiss the last two batsmen in the 50th over amid pandemonium.

Younis finished with six for 30 in 9.4 overs, the fourth time he has taken five or more wickets against New Zealand in a one-day match.

They are also the best figures by anyone against New Zealand in a one-day match.

The result is New Zealand's first tie in an international match.

New Zealand's chase for its first victory in the series began disastrously.

In his third over. Younis bowled both openers Blair Hartland and Bryan Young the latter with a superb. fast-swinging yorker in the space of four balls.

Captain Ken Rutherford and Andrew Jones revived the innings with a grafting stand of 56 for the third wicket.

Rutherford was dropped by Younis at long leg off Ata-ur-Rehman on 12, but there were several positive strokes during their stand.

Having brought up their 50 stand in 59 minutes, Jones clipped off-spinner Akram Raza low to mid-wicket where Basit Ali took a very good catch.

Twenty runs later Rutherford lofted Salim Malik to long off, having made a gritty 47 in 76 balls.

The match was delicately balanced with 68 runs needed in 15 overs.

Chris Cairns and Shane Thomson added 57 in 64 balls with some aggressive batting to ease the match New Zealand's way.

On three. Thomson was dropped by Saeed Anwar at point off Aamir Sohail but they reduced the target to 43 in 10 overs, but there came a mini-collapse shortly after.

Thomson edged Younis to wicketkeeper Rashid Latif at 142, and in the next over Tony Blain, having been dropped by Raza at point from the first ball, also gave Latif a catch. from Wasim Akram.

At 152, Cairns was run out by a direct throw from Rehman at mid-off for 39 and two balls later Gavin Larsen went leg before wicket to Younis.

New Zealand needed 10 from the last two overs, and scored seven from the 49th.

Younis bagged his fifth wicket of the innings with the first ball of the last over, bowling Matthew Hart.

With the help of an overthrow. last pair Richard de Groen and Chris Pringle scrambled two runs to tie the scores, then Younis ended the match when he had de Groen leg before wicket with the fourth ball of the over.

In the space of 20 balls. Younis had taken four wickets for eight runs.

Pakistan's batsmen struggled to. dominate the New Zealand attack during their innings.

Only four players reached double figures, with Basit's 34 being the top score. The largest partnership of the innings was 38 between openers Anwar and Sohail.

The early damage to Pakistan's innings was done by slow-medium Larsen.

The one-day specialist produced his best limited-overs figures of four for 24 including the first three wickets in his first five overs.

At six for 101 after 34 overs. Pakistan were battling to post a competitive score.

However, there was an important 26-run stand for the seventh wicket between Basit and Akram and a handy late contribution from Raza and Ata-ur-Rehman enabled Pakistan to give New Zealand a required run rate of a fraction over three an over.

Larsen was well supported by part-time off-spinner Thomson, who took two for 22, left-arm spinner Hart, in his first one-day international, and Pringle.

The fifth and final match of the series, which Pakistan lead 3-0, will be at Christchurch on Wednesday.
