A brilliant final 10 overs by Australia choked off South Africa and enabled the tourists to square the eight-match one-day cricket series.

Australia totalled 6-203 from its 50 overs and South Africa was cruising at 3-144 in reply at the 40-over mark, needing only a run a ball for the rest of the innings to take the rubber 5-3.

Opener Andrew Hudson soon fell for 84 and a middle-order collapse saw South Africa fall short at 8-203, giving Allan Border an appropriate sign-off from international cricket, should he retire as expected next month.

Border entrusted his most inexperienced player in Damien Fleming with the responsibility of bowling the last over and he rose to the occasion, conceding just four runs when six would have lost the match.

The two teams also split the Test series, as they did in Australia, and Border said the 4-4 result was an accurate reflection on how close the two countries were.

"In every match the teams have played, there's been virtually nothing in it," Border said.

Australia struggled to 6-203 after making an exceptionally slow start, grinding to 3-85 at the 30-over mark.

David Boon (45) and Steve Waugh (42) shared an important stand of 71 for the fourth wicket but the vital late-over impetus was provided by busy wicket keeper Ian Healy.

Healy punched an unbeaten 41 from 31 balls and left the home side with a target of 4.08 an over for victory.

McMillan (four) was run out by a back-handed flick by Healy and it took a late flurry by Dave Richardson and Eric Simons to make the result close.

South African captain Kepler Wessels said his men had snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

"We had things well in hand at the 40-over mark but we didn't bat well in the run home," Wessels said.

Hudson was named man of the match while Steve Waugh was named man of the series
