Cricket's most incestuous show came to a thrilling end at the MCG, perhaps never to be seen again, when Australia defeated Australia A by six wickets to clinch the World Series finals.

A crowd of 53,765 were on the edge of their seats as player of the finals Steve Waugh and Stuart Law guided the national team home with some lusty hitting in the final overs.

Australia was set a target of 227 and after a few hiccups. made it with six balls to spare.

A massive six over long on by Steve Waugh off Jo Angel and some untimely misfields put the equation in Australia's favour after it needed 29 runs off the final four overs.

National skipper Mark Taylor, who was never a fan of the concept of playing an international series against a team made up of compatriots, was relieved the finals did not continue into a third and deciding match.

Australia also won the opening finals match by five wickets in Sydney on Sunday.

The main team looked to be cruising in its run chase when openers Michael Slater and Taylor posted a century opening stand but the A side fought its way back into the contest by capturing three Australian wick ets for nine runs.

Allrounder Greg Blewett, who earlier top scored for the A team with a delightful 64. dismissed Taylor (50) and Mark Waugh (3) in successive overs with Slater (56) being brilliantly run out by a direct throw from Michael Bevan, to place Australia in trouble at 116.

Steve Waugh then came to the crease and together with David Boon set about restoring Australia's momentum with a 56-run partnership.

Damien Martyn's sharp catch at mid-wicket to remove Boon for 27 gave his charges a glim- mer of hope but Law then joined Waugh and with a combination of intelligent placement and big hitting won the game with an unbeaten 57-run stand.

The A team was regretting the one that got away when it frittered away a dream start.

Martyn, who blasted 58 off only 40 balls and Blewett had the A side in complete control at 1.97 after the 15th over but then the underdog lost its way.

Glenn McGrath whose opening two overs cost 21 runs. fought his way back and he and Victorian Damien Fleming applied the breaks while grabbing seven wickets between them.

McGrath's 3-41 made him the series highest wicket taker with 18 scalps while Fleming was again rewarded with a nagging length and finished with 4-28.
