England's path to victory against Australia in their one-day clash at the Melbourne Cricket Ground was littered with injuries.

And the worst of them was a stress fracture of the left foot suffered by man of the moment Darren Gough.

Both he and batsman Neil Fair- brother who damaged a shoulder were sent to hospital for X-rays while their teammates virtually booked a place in the World Series finals.

Fairbrother sprained his right shoulder in the field and his place in the remaining limited over matches. is also in doubt.

Ironically. Gough starred with the bat last night as he and Graeme Hick boosted England to a total of 8-225 off 50 overs.

The pair came together with the tourists struggling at 6-142 and added 74 runs for the seventh wicket in just 55 minutes.

Hick proved the cornerstone of the innings, contributing a stylish 91 that included a six smashed off a Gavin Robertson long-hop over mid-wicket.

Australia was always in trouble af ter losing its first three wickets - all to Angus Fraser for just 19 runs.

Fraser bowled Michael Slater for two and had Mark Taylor caught by wicketkeeper Steve Rhodes for six be fore Steve Waugh was dispatched in similar fashion for a duck.

Wicketkeeper lan Healy provided at ray of hope with a disciplined half century, including just one four, but it was to no avail.

Australia, which had been guaran- teed a place in the finals before this match after winning the opening five games, now seems likely to meet Eng land in the best-of-three finals series.

England meets Australia A in the last match in the preliminary rounds in Sydney tomorrow, but would have to suffer a heavy defeat to miss out.

Chris Lewis, who is in Australia playing in a local competition, subbed last night and will travel to Sydney with the team which has been hard hit by injuries.

Wicket keeper-batsman Alec Stew- art, who broke a finger during the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne, is al- most fit enough to bat but still has problems fielding.

Captain Mark Taylor said Australia had possibly lacked motivation.
