Star Australian leg spinner Shane Warne bowled the tour best overs of his life as he burst back into the spotlight and ended concerns over his recent form.

Buoyed by the sight of his favour ite batsman. Warne cast a spell over South Africa for Australia to clinch a three-wicket victory in the opening match of the New Zealand centenary limited overs tournament.

Warne finished with 2-18 from his 10 overs, including three maidens, as South Africa tumbled out for 123 on a difficult, slow Basin Reserve pitch.

Australia was teetering at 5-56 in reply but an unbeaten 44 from Steve Waugh led Mark Taylor's side to 7124 and victory with 64 overs to spare
By his own admission, Warne faded as the recent Ashes series progressed and Australia needed to see some sparkle from its match-winner before next month's trip to the Caribbean.

The Victorian responded from the moment he saw Daryl Cullinan at the crease for South Africa, immediately dismissing the bunny he terrorised all through last summer in a riveting opening spell of 22 from four overs.

He should have had a third wicket but for an amazing umpiring mistake and captain Mark Taylor was thrilled that Warne had struck back so emphatically

Warne had Cullinan stumped by lan Healy for another duck while Dave Callaghan (one) sliced a catch to Steve Waugh at point.

In his second over, the Victorian clearly found the edge of Cronje's bat when the score was 3-53 and the catch flew straight to Taylor at slip.

Cronje stood his ground and umpire Brian Aldridge stunned the Austral ians by giving the South African captain not out.
