New Zealand's Stephen Fleming scored an unbeaten 59 against India to give the Kiwis their first international limited-overs win in 16 games.
After bowling India out for 160. New Zealand scored the winning runs with 17.4 overs to spare in the quadrangular Centenary Se ries match.
Navjot Sidhu top-scored with a fine 73 in the Indi an innings after the visitors had been sent in by Ken Rutherford.
What looked likely to be a comfortable victory almost slipped away from the home team. which lost three wickets in the 29th over bowled by medium paceman Javagal Srinath.
In-form left-hander Fleming kept a cool head, however, and smashed his runs off 58 balls, finishing the match by pulling a delivery from Srinath for his fifth boundary.
Fleming also hit a massive six one of four in the New Zea land innings when he hoisted a ball from paceman Venkatesh Prasad over square leg.
New Zealand was given a firm start as Mark Greatbatch, who scored 32 runs off 38 balls, and Martin Crowe (8) put on 42 runs in eight overs before both fell in the space of six deliveries.
