India romped to a consolation win against lacklustre Australia, already assured of a place in the final, in the centenary cricket tournament.

Australia, letting its fielding standards slip, went through the motions and lost to India by five wickets at Carisbrook Park.

Mark Taylor's side reached a respectable 6-250 from its 50 overs but then spilt six catches as India raced to 5-252 in reply with 13 balls to spare.

Manoj Prabhakar (50) and Sachin Tendulkar (47) provided a flying start of 97 in the first 16 overs while Navjot Sidhu (54) and Vinod Kambli (51 not out) ensured Australia would not make a clean sweep of its three qualifying matches.

Star leg-spinner Shane Warne was treated with uncommon disrespect and blasted for 61 runs from his 10 overs.

Tendulkar and Prabhakar took 19 runs from Warne's opening over and 41 runs from his opening spell of five overs.

Australia was in the mood to experiment, shuffling David Boon (32) and Ricky Ponting (62) up the order for further opportunities.

Boon was cruising before holing out to deep mid-wicket in search of his sixth boundary while Ponting hit one four and one six in a top score for the innings from the 91 balls he faced.

Mark Waugh lashed 48 from 32 balls to set India a target of 5.02 per over for victory and Taylor said the batting was in fine fettle for Sunday's final against either South Africa or New Zealand.

Taylor dropped Prabhakar when he was six while Tendul kar. Mohammed Azharuddin, Kambli (twice) and Sanjay Manjrekar were all given let-offs.

Warne was fined $500 for wearing a black wrist band with a sponsor's name on it during match.

Warne, Ponting and Greg Blewett drew fines from match referee Peter van der Merwe, of South Africa. Warne's was 25 percent of his $2000 match fee while Ponting was fined 15 percent and Blewett 10 percent.

A statement from New Zealand Cricket said the three players were in direct contravention an ICC regulation relating to the wearing of wristlets which were other than plain white with no logos.
