India chase down the target of 236 for 5 in 45.5 overs with top scorer by Mohammad Azharuddin struck 58 off 68-balls including 5-fours.

Sanjay Manjrekar cracked a unbeaten 47 off 56-balls including 3-fours, Vinod Kambli struck 42 off 65-balls included 3-fours.

Nayan Mongia blasted a unbeaten 36 off 30-balls including 7-fours with strike rate of 120 and Manoj Prabhakar hit 20 off 31-balls included 3-fours.

New Zealand best bowler by Chris Cairns picked up 3-wickets and one for Danny Morrison.

Chris Cairns named Player of the match for his all-round performance to picked up 3-wickets for 37-runs in 10-overs including a maiden with economy rate of 3.70 after smashing a career-best whirlwind 103-runs knocked off facing 87-balls including 10-fours & 4-sixes with strike rate of 118.39.

India beat New Zealand by five wickets in their fourth one-day cricket international, despite an aggressive century by man-of-the-match Chris Cairns, to take a 2-1 lead in the series.

Cairns scored his maiden one-day international century to save New Zealand from a disastrous start of 4-75, and then took three valuable wickets to give his side a fighting chance.

The record fifth-wicket partner ship of 147 runs between Cairns and Roger Twose gave New Zealand's score a semblance of respectability at 6-235 in 50 overs.

Cairns knock of 103 off 88 halls was studded with 10 boundaries and four sixes. He was out stumped by Nayan Mongia off Sachin Tendulkar.

India, whose skipper Moham mad Azharuddin won the toss and put the tourists in to bat, was set a run rate of 4.7 an over to win the match. They scored 5-238 in 45.5 overs.

They lost an early wicket when Tendulkar was caught by Gavin Larsen off Danny Morrison for seven. But useful knocks by Vinod Kambli and Azharuddin steadily pushed the score up.

Cairns dismissed opener Manoj Prabhakar for 20 to put the brakes to the Indian march initially. In his second spell he removed both Azharuddin and Ajay Jadeja, in a space of only 14 balls, to infuse some life into the match.

But Sanjay Manjrekar, proving his reliability once again, steered India to safety and victory with an unbeaten 47. In the company of Mongia, Manjrekar added 57 runs for the unbeaten fifth wicket. Mongia finished with an aggressive 36 runs off 30 balls.

The two sides meet again at Nagpur on Sunday in the fifth game of the six-match series, which India leads 2-1 after, the third in Goa on Tuesday was washed out by rain.
