Top-order batsmen Sanath Jayasuriya's scintillating 67-ball 96, Marvan Atapattu's classy half-century, All-round display by Aravinda de Silva's run-a-ball 90 with two wickets, Arjuna Ranatunga's captain innings of 80 and Pacer Sajeewa de Silva's top three-wickets helped to Sri Lanka's record 115-run victory over Pakistan and take a 1-0 lead in a historic first final encounter of the best-of-three finals of a Pepsi Independence Cup.

Match Stats:

  • This is the first instance of Sri Lanka's four batsmen were scores of fifty or more runs in their innings in one-day international cricket history and overall the third such instance in ODIs, previous such two instance came by England against Australia at Birmingham in 1980 and Zimbabwe against New Zealand at Harare in 1992.
  • Sri Lanka's 115-run win was fourth largest victory by terms of runs in one-day international and It is their biggest win by terms-of-runs against Pakistan in ODIs, previous biggest win by 75-runs at Sharjah in the 1996 Singer Champions Trophy.

Sri Lanka scored mammoth total of 339-4 in 50 overs with top scorer by Sanath Jayasuriya hammered a 96 off 67-balls - who fell four-run short of his century.

Aravinda de Silva cracked a run-a-ball 90-runs including 10-fours & a six,  Arjuna Ranatunga blasted a 80 off 70-balls included 8-fours & a six with strike rate of 114.28 and Marvan Atapattu struck 53 off 72-balls contained 4-fours.

Pakistan best bowler by Mohammad Hussain and Saqlain Mushtaq both took 2-wickets.

Pakistan bowled out for 224 in 43.5 overs with top scorer by Moin Khan cracked a unbeaten 57 off 61-balls including 4-fours.

Ramiz Raja struck 42 off 54-balls including 3-fours, Saleem Malik hit 29 off 27-balls included 2-fours, Ijaz Ahmed hit 23 off 20-balls contained two-fours.

Shahid Afridi blasted a 18 off 10-balls including 2-fours with strike rate of 180 and Saqlain Mushtaq scored 18 off 53-balls contained a boundary.

* Inzamam-ul-Haq and Abdul Razzaq did not bat due to injury during the fielding.

Sri Lanka best bowler by Sajeewa de Silva picked up 3-wickets for 40-runs in 7-overs, Kumar Dharmasena and Aravinda de Silva both took 2-wickets.

Sanath Jayasuriya named Player of the match for his scintillating 96 off 67-balls including 12-fours & a six with strike rate of 143.28.
