South Africa qualified for the semi-finals of the World Cup with a six-wicket victory over India in rain-shortened cricket match at Adelaide Oval.

Rain delayed the start until 1.15pm and, after being sent in, India made 6-180 with both teams allocated 30 overs instead of the usual 50.

South Africa finished at 4-181 with Hansie Cronje securing the win by smashing Manoj Prabhakar to the mid-wicket boundary for four off the first ball of the final over.

South Africa's triumph was made possible by a 128-run opening stand between Peter Kirsten and Andrew Hudson in 24 overs.

The man of the match, Kirsten compiled 84 off 86 balls and established himself as the leading run maker in the Cup, with 396.

South Africa finished the round-robin stage with 10 points from eight games and joins New Zealand and England in the play-offs.

The West Indies is fourth on the ladder on eight points and can stay in the last four if it beats Australia in Melbourne on Wednesday, while a win for Allan Border's side could allow the hosts to sneak in.

India's formidable total yesterday was largely due to skipper Mohammad Azharuddin slashing 79 off 77 balls and a whirlwind 42 off 29 balls from veteran all-rounder Kapil Dev.

India completed the round robin with five points and heads home later this week after a unsuccessful four-month Australian tour.

Wherever it plays, South Africa will be fresher than any other finals team as its round robin commitments have been completed.

South Africa, which posted 10 points by winning five of its eight games, will spend the next three days in Adelaide.

Captain Kepler Wessels said, "I must admit since we've been in Australia the Australian people have been magnificent.

"We've had a lot of support and we appreciate that as a team, and particularly for someone like me who has Australian connections it's been fantastic.

"Getting into the semi-finals was something we really wanted.

"I always felt if we could win four from eight we would have done well after being out of international cricket so long."

The loss ended a miserable and exhausting four-month Australasian tour by India, which crashed 4-0 in the Test series with Australia and was runner-up in the triangular World Series.

A dejected Azharuddin said, "The least we could have done was qualify for the Cup finals."
