Pakistan promptly set its plans to become the first team to defeat New Zealand in this year's World Cup after remaining in the hunt for the tournament finals with a four-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in Perth.

A win against New Zealand, which has comfortably won its seven matches, on Wednesday and a West Indies loss to Australia on the same day, will put Pakistan into the semi-finals.

Despite New Zealand's record on home soil, Pakistan manager Intikhab Alam believes Pakistan has the qualities to end the Kiwi's outstanding run.

Chasing 213 at the WACA Ground, Pakistan compiled 6-216 in 49.1 overs with experienced batsmen Javed Miandad (57) and Salim Malik (51) steering the team to its third win of the tournament.

The Pakistan run chase encountered early problems with the dismissal of openers Aamir Sohail (one) and Rameez Raja (32) with 68 runs after 20 overs.

Allrounder Imran Khan, who made 22 runs, attempted to settle the innings but his patience in scoring, with two runs in 37 balls, increased Pakistan's required run-rate to 51⁄2 an over.

But Malik and Miandad, with almost 350 limited overs matches between them. steadied the Pakistan effort with a brilliant 101-run bond. It was only after Pakistan had climbed back into a winning position that they swung the bat in search of match-winning runs.

Pakistan still needed eight runs to win off just two overs remaining although the task was achieved with five balls to spare when Ijaz Ahmed drove Sri Lankan pace bowler Pramodya Wickremasingha for four runs.

The Sri Lankans, who have completed their World Cup commitments, held high hopes of victory after scoring 6-212 in their allotted 50 overs.

A 43-run performance by captain Aravinda De Silva enabled Sri Lanka to set Pakistan a challenging target, but Pakistan gained control of the contest when Miandad and Malik defied the Sri Lankan attack for 90 minutes.
