Pakistan, spurred by a superb Rameez Raja century, reached the World Cup semi-finals last night after crushing New Zealand at Lancaster Park.

Pakistan's seven-wicket win snuffed Australia's chance of getting to the semi-finals, and the West Indies loss to Australia put Imran Khan's team into the fourth spot.

Rameez hit the top score of the tournament-119 not out off 155 balls to ensure the win, which was set up by Pakistan's bowlers. They justified Imran's decision to put New Zealand in on a pacey pitch, bundling the joint hosts out for 166 in 48.2 overs.

All the Pakistan bowlers contributed to New Zealand's demise, but none more than Mushtaq, who went on in the eighth over with New Zealand already in trouble at 2-36.

In a brilliant spell, no-one managed to hit a boundary from him. Mushtaq was backed by a fine stint from paceman Wasim Akram, who took 4-32, but his performance was spoilt by nine wides and two no-balls.

Captain Martin Crowe said New Zealand did not score enough runs. "We know we let ourselves down with the bat," he said.

But he said the loss may serve as a lesson to New Zealand.

Crowe said he was relieved that New Zealand would play its semi-final against Pakistan in Auckland on Saturday rather than against Australia in Sydney.

The Pakistan batsmen made hard work at first at getting runs, losing Aamir Sohail first ball to Danny Morrison, who then bowled Inzamamul Haq in his next over.

But a sensible 115-run third wicket partnership between Rameez and Javed Miandad carried Pakistan to 3-167 with 5.2 overs to spare.

Rameez was rarely troubled, although approaching his century he used a runner briefly.

His main partner, Miandad, batted scratchily and Dipak Patel dropped a caught-and-bowled chance on three, but he stayed long enough to win the game before Morrison trapped him lbw for 30.

The New Zealand fielders excelled as they have through the competition, but 166 proved too small a target to defend.

"It was the bowling which set up the match," Imran said.

All the Pakistan bowlers contributed to New Zealand's demise, but none more than Mushtaq
