A strong defensive effort with the ball put Australia in a position to regain some pride in its one-day cricket series against Sri Lanka after the home team had wrapped up the series 2-0 on Friday.

Australia restricted Sri Lanka to 6-207 from its 50 overs in the day-night match at the Khettarama Stadium.

The home side was flying at 1-101 before the middle order lost its way and left Australia facing a target of 4.16 runs an over for victory.

Aravinda de Silva guided Sri Lanka past 200 with a studious 39 while Hashan Tillekeratne provided a late flourish with an unbeaten 35 from only 38 deliveries.

After captain Allan Border won the toss for the first time in an international match on this tour, the Australians made the perfect start when Craig McDermott took a wicket with his first ball.

Roshan Mahanama hung his bat at a wide ball and poked a catch to Mark Taylor at second slip, bringing Asanka Gurusinha to join Chandika Hathurusinghe.

Gurusinha and Hathurusinghe both continued their fine recent form and carried Sri Lanka to 1-101 in the 26th over before the middle order lost its way.

Hathurusinghe, man of the match in the second one-dayer, reached 46 from 77 deliveries, hitting six boundaries, before he lofted Greg Matthews to David Boon at deep mid-wicket.

Matthews also accounted for Gurusinha, lbw for 49, while Mike Whitney rebounded from a poor first spell to dismiss Arjuna Ranatunga (15) and Sanath Jayasuriya (7) in consecutive
overs.

Ranatunga chopped Whitney on to his off-stump in the 36th over while Jayasuriya's carbon-copy dismissal left Sri Lanka struggling at 5-145.

Tillekeratne's late flourish sent the crowd into a frenzy and the last 12 overs was played out to continuous drums and whistles.

Tillekeratne greeted Tony Dodemaide with a straight drive for four while de Silva came out of his shell to finish with two boundaries before holing out to Matthews from Dodemaide.
