Mike Atherton and his humiliated England cricket team crawled away from Arnos Vale after taking one of the biggest hammerings of all time.

On a ground famous for low scoring, West Indies roared to 6-313 in the third one-day international the highest total made against England in limited-overs cricket.

Then the shell-shocked tourists mustered just 9-148 in reply to lose by 165 runs, England's biggest defeat in run-margin terms in a 222-game history of one-day internationals.

But England manager Keith Fletcher insisted that his team had the character to bounce back.

"We've played poorly, and there are no excuses but I don't think heads will drop," Fletcher said. "We've got back-to-back games in Trinidad this weekend and we can still win 3-2."

Atherton did his side few favours by choosing to field first. A relaid pitch threw him or his advisers - by playing respectably enough from the start before gradually getting lower and slower.

But the skipper could not be blamed for bowling that was simply wretched. On the evidence of this display, replacements are urgently needed whether or not knee-injury victim Devon Malcolm returns.

Openers Desmond Haynes and Phil Simmons were given every possible encouragement to launch the Windies' ferocious assault with a record-breaking stand of 145.

Then Brian Lara stormed to 60 with contemptuous ease before captain Richie Richardson, playing his 200th one-day international, upstaged them all by clubbing an unbeaten 52 off just 26 balls.

The skipper's awesome innings included six fours and two sixes and 18 of his runs came during one over from Alan Igglesden, which cost 23 in total.

It was sheer brutality against an England attack apparently incapable of defending itself. And the biggest worry of all is that it might have done irreparable damage to the confidence of Atherton's bowlers.
