Sri Lanka's young batsman kept their nerve in a massive run chase to secure a thrilling win over Zimbabwe at the World Cup cricket match at Pukekura Park.

Set a seemingly insurmountable 312- run target, Sri Lanka scrambled to a three-wicket win with four balls to spare.

The hero was all-rounder Arjuna Ranatunga, who celebrated his 100th one-day international by hitting an unbeaten 88 off 62 balls after his side was staggering at 4-169 in the 33rd over.

While the gripping match will long be remembered for its constant stream of big hits, there were a number of records set.

Ranatunga became the first Sri Lankan to reach the 100 milestone in a World Cup clash, while Zimbabwe recorded its highest score in one-day internationals, eclipsing the 240 scored against Australia in 1983.

The effort was spearheaded by 23-year-old opening batsman Andy Flower, who finished 115 not out, his first first-class century in his maiden one-day international.

Overshadowing Flower's efforts at the end of the innings was burly Andy Waller, whose brilliant, unbeaten 83 came off just 45 balls. He reached his half-century in 32 deliveries, setting a World Cup record for all nations.

The two players also established a new World Cup fifth-wicket partnership of 145.

Not surprisingly, Sri Lanka's reply was its highest one-day total and if not for Waller, Athula Samarasekera would have made the record books by reaching his 50 in 33 balls.

As it was, Samarasekera (75 off 61 balls) had the satisfaction of putting Sri Lanka on course for victory. He and Roshan Mahanama (59 off 89) began the run chase at a frenetic pace, posting a 128-run partnership in 134 balls.

However, a middle-innings slump left Sri Lanka needing nine runs an over with 15 overs to be bowled. When captain Aravinda De Silva (14) and Asanka Gurusinha (5) had both failed to fire, all seemed lost.

Ranatunga and young Sanath Jayasuriya begun collecting singles before hitting out as their confidence grew, with Jayasuriya hitting two sixes and two fours in reaching 32 off 23 balls.

Veteran Zimbabwe spinner John Traicos tied down one end but Ranatunga continued to collect runs at the asking rate with wicketkeeper Hashan Tillekaratne (18) and Ruwan Kalpage (11). With five overs to go only 40 runs were needed.

Ranatunga had brought up his 50 in the 43 overs with a massive six and after being caught off a Malcolm Jarvis no-ball in the 48th over put the issue beyond doubt in the penultimate over, edging Eddo Brandes for boundaries past wicketkeeper Flower.

With three needed for the win off the last over, Ranatunga got Sri Lanka home by pulling Jarvis through mid-wicket for four.
