SOUTH AFRICA scored a famous four-run victory in Cape Town, bundling out the West Indies for 136 in their triangular one-day series with Pakistan.
Superb bowling and fielding by the host nation stifled what should have been a formality for the West Indies after they had restricted a pedestrian South African batting line-up to 9-140 in its allotted 50 overs.
West Indies opened at a cracking seven runs an over, but the early losses of Desmond Haynes for a duck in the fourth over and captain Richie Richardson for two in the sixth sobered the visitors.
Pringle claimed Simmons for 20 with his first ball and Craig Matthews ran out Brian Lara for 14.
The game turned crucially against the West Indians when they lost top scorer Carl Hooper to Cronje for 34, and they slumped to 8-113.
Curtly Ambrose (19 not out) offered West Indies hope until Cronje and Pringle polished off the tail.
Captain Richie Richardson said his side took too many chances when they had been set a relatively simple target.
. "There was no need for three run-outs," he said.
Patrick Patterson was given out to a dubious LBW off Meyrick Pringle's sharply rising final ball of the 47th over for South Africa to complete its second successive win over the West Indies.
