Phil Simmons' career-best scintillating 122 and Brian Lara's half-century sets up to West Indies registered their historic first ODI win against South Africa by a massive 107-runs and take a 1-0 lead in a one-sided game of the first ODI.

  • Phil Simmons became the first West Indies batsman to score a century against South Africa in One-day international cricket history.
  • Phil Simmons' 122 was his highest score for West Indies in One-day international and the highest-score by an West Indies batsman against South Africa in ODIs, surpassing the previous record of 61 held by Gus Logie at Christchurch in the 1992 World Cup.

West Indies scored 287-6 in 50 overs with top scorer by Phil Simmons hammered a career-best 122 off 113-balls - which was his 3rd ODI hundred and his first century against South Africa in ODIs.

Brian Lara struck 50 off 68-balls including 4-fours, Richie Richardson cracked a 30 off 47-balls without a boundary.

Keith Arthurton cracked a run-a-ball 27-runs including a boundary and Carl Hooper scored a unbeaten 19 off 18-balls without a boundary.

South Africa best bowler by Allan Donald took 2-wickets and one for Omar Henry.

South Africa bowled out for 180 in 42.2 overs with top scorer by Andrew Hudson hit 50 off 70-balls including 5-fours.

Hansie Cronje cracked a 42 off 56-balls including a six, Jonty Rhodes hit a run-a-ball 17-runs included a boundary, Adrian Kuiper and Peter Kirsten each scored 15-runs.

West Indies best bowler by Winston Benjamin picked up 3-wickets for 45-runs in 9.2-overs, Patrick Patterson captured 2-wickets for 17-runs in 7-overs including two maidens with economy rate of 2.42, Anderson Cummins took 2-wickets and one for Carl Hooper.

Phil Simmons named Player of the match for his scintillating batting performance to smashed a career-best 122-runs knocked off facing 113-balls including 12-fours & 5-sixes with strike rate of 107.96.
