Australia lost the sixth one-day cricket international against South Africa by 26 runs amid complaints about the standard of the lights at St George's Park.

The tourists were bowled out for 201 from 49.1 overs in reply to South Africa's 6-227, but only after the start of the innings had been delayed for 10 minutes because of poor lighting.

As many as six lights in one pylon failed and coach Bob Simpson and team manager Dr Cam Battersby lodged a protest.

"In our view, the lights are less than optimal," Dr Battersby said before the Australian innings.

"If you are going to start with lights that are clearly inadequate with six lights missing from one pylon, it really doesn't give the side batting second a fair chance.

"If we manage to get through in what we regard as unsatisfactory conditions, we'll have done jolly well."

After the match, captain Allan Border said the lighting could have been better but said the Australians would accept the loss and their 4-2 deficit in the eight-match series.

"We've lost the match and we'll leave it at that."
