Sri Lanka chasing 297 was big target in Sri Lanka Conditions, their opener added on 22 runs without lost a wicket after 5 overs.

Rain interrupted play between at 2:45pm to 3:35pm, Sri Lanka target to win was revised to 263 runs needed from 40 overs, with 12 overs of fielding restrictions and a maximum of 8 overs per bowler.

According to clause 11.2 in the One Day International Playing Conditions this should have prevented India from qualifying for the final (Only those matches where results were achieved and where the Duckworth/Lewis method for recalculating the target score was not utilized will count for the purpose of net run rate calculations).

However, all available evidence indicates that this rule had been ignored/forgotten and Sri Lanka needed to score 222 runs needed off 40 overs to qualify for the Aiwa Cup final.

After 7 overs at 4:18pm (Sri Lanka added 71 for none in 12 overs) the match referee interrupted the match to inform the umpires that a miscalculation was made and that it should be a 42 over match.

The Sri Lankan target to win was 're-revised' to 271 off in 42 overs and the apparent target to qualify for the final calculated to be 232. No further adjustment was made to the fielding restrictions in this Match.

Sanath Jayasuriya and Marvan Atapattu build the 105 run stand for first wicket.

Jayawardene scored a run a ball 62, Jayawardene helped to Srilankan Qualify to final, they reached Qualify total 232, he was catch out by Chopra, at this Stage Sri Lanka 238 for 7 in 40.2 overs.

Indian bowler Venkatesh Prasad, Anil Kumble and Robin Singh each took two-wickets helped to Sri Lanka batting restricted to 247 for 9 in 42 overs, Unfortunately Even when Sachin Tendulkar, Robin Singh stars as India won by DLS method 23-runs but India didn't go to the Aiwa Cup Final.
